Brewing Your Yerba Mate
Drinking yerba mate plays an important part of the culture in South American, especially in Agentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay, It is enjoyed in other South American countries also but it is especially popular in the southern region because yerba mate only can be cultivated in the region where Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina meet. It is typically drunk from a gourd (a natural, hollowed out fruit) which serves as the cup. Is it sipped through a bombilla (a straw with filtered end, usually made of metal) and shared between friends and family.
However tea bag is growing in popularity to complement the traditional method of prepartion due the convenience. It tastes the same as the loose leaf traditionally prepared brew. The ideal water temperature to use for brewing yerba mate tea bags is 82C (not boiling water, which would normally burn the yerba and leave a bitter taste). The temperature doesn’t need to be exact, if you switch off your kettle a little before it boils furiously the temperature will be fine.
To prepare, place 1 yerba mate tea bag in a mug and brew for 2-3 minutes. If you like a very strong infusion, increase brewing time. If you find it too strong and bitter, reduce brewing time.
For iced yerba mate, brew as normal with hot water, then cool in the fridge or with ice.
