The Complete Uruguayan Yerba Mate Kit
Walk through any Uruguayan town and you’ll see it everywhere: a mate in one hand, a thermos tucked under the arm, and a yellow bag of Canarias in the cupboard at home. This Uruguayan yerba mate kit brings that whole ritual together in one box, so you can start drinking mate the Uruguayan way straight away.
A Gift for Anyone Who Loves Uruguay
For a Uruguayan living abroad, this kit is a taste of home: the flask, the gourd, and the yerba they grew up with. For anyone who has travelled there or fallen for mate culture, it’s the complete set-up in one go. Every piece is quality stainless steel, made to last for years of daily mate.
What’s in the Kit
- 1kg Canarias yerba mate
- 1L stainless steel flask with red pico cebador
- Stainless steel mate gourd with maroon leather-look sleeve
- Stainless steel bombilla
Canarias Yerba Mate, 1kg
Canarias is the yerba of Uruguay: the famous yellow bag found in kitchens, offices and car glovebox stashes across the country. It’s made in the traditional Uruguayan style, finely ground with no stems, giving a strong, full-bodied flavour that holds up through refill after refill. A full kilo means plenty of mornings before you need to restock.
The Flask
A 1 litre insulated stainless steel flask built for mate. Its standout feature is the red pico cebador, the precision pouring spout found on flasks right across Uruguay. It lets out a thin, controlled stream so you can pour exactly where you want in the gourd, keeping the yerba dry and the flavour lasting longer. Remove the pico cebador and it pours quickly for tea, coffee or filling a teapot. The sturdy side handle makes it easy to carry, and the screw-on cap doubles as a cup.
The Gourd
The gourd is high grade double-walled stainless steel, which keeps your mate at the right temperature from first pour to last. It’s wrapped in maroon silicone with a leather grain texture and stitched seam detail, so it looks and feels like a traditional hand-stitched leather gourd. Four sculpted feet echo the shape of a natural calabaza and keep it steady on the table.
There’s no curing needed. The stainless steel interior won’t absorb flavours, crack or go mouldy, and the sleeve wipes clean in seconds.
- Height: 10.5cm
- Opening: 7.5cm
- Widest point: 9cm
- Volume: 280ml
The Bombilla
A polished stainless steel bombilla with a gently curved stem, a flat mouthpiece for comfortable sipping, and a spoon-style filter that keeps the yerba out of your drink. The decorative detail at the top gives it a crafted finish that matches the gourd.
Why the Pico Cebador Matters
Pouring mate is an art. Too much water too fast and the yerba floods, losing its flavour after just a few refills. The pico cebador controls the flow so the cebador, the person serving, can pour slowly into the same spot each time, keeping the montañita of yerba intact. It’s such a part of daily life in Uruguay that a mate flask without one looks unfinished.
How to Brew Uruguayan Mate
- Fill the gourd around two-thirds full with Canarias.
- Cover the top with your palm, tip it upside down and shake gently to bring the dust to the surface.
- Tilt the gourd so the yerba forms a slope to one side.
- Pour a little cool water into the lower space and let it absorb.
- Insert the bombilla into the wet area, then pour hot water (70–80°C, never boiling) into the same spot.
- Sip, refill and enjoy.

Care
Empty the yerba after each session, rinse the gourd and bombilla with warm water and leave to dry. Wipe the sleeve with a damp cloth. Run hot water through the bombilla now and then to keep the filter clear.
