The Complete Uruguayan Mate Set

In Uruguay, you’ll rarely see a mate without a thermos tucked under the arm beside it. This yerba mate set with flask brings that everyday ritual together in one kit: a 1 litre flask, a stainless steel gourd and a matching bombilla, all from Gaucho Bruno. Fill the flask, grab your gourd and you’re set for hours of mate wherever you go.

The Gourd

The body is high grade double wall stainless steel, which keeps your mate at the right temperature from the first pour to the last. It’s wrapped in maroon silicone with a leather grain texture and stitched seam detail, so it looks and feels like a traditional hand-stitched leather gourd. Four sculpted feet echo the shape of a natural calabaza and keep it steady on the table.

There’s no curing. The stainless steel interior won’t absorb flavours, crack or go mouldy, and the sleeve wipes clean in seconds.

  • Height: 10.5cm
  • Opening: 7.5cm
  • Widest point: 9cm
  • Volume: 280ml

The Bombilla

A polished stainless steel bombilla with a gently curved stem, a flat mouthpiece for comfortable sipping, and a spoon-style filter that keeps the yerba out of your drink. The decorative detail at the top gives it a crafted finish that matches the gourd.

The Flask

A 1 litre insulated stainless steel flask built for mate. Its standout feature is the red pico cebador, the precision pouring spout found on flasks right across Uruguay. It lets out a thin, controlled stream so you can pour exactly where you want in the gourd, keeping the yerba dry and the flavour lasting longer.

Need to pour quickly instead, for tea, coffee or filling a teapot? Simply remove the pico cebador and the flask becomes a fast pour spout. The sturdy side handle makes it easy to carry and pour, and the screw-on cap doubles as a cup.

Why the Pico Cebador Matters

Pouring mate is an art. Too much water too fast and the yerba floods, losing its flavour after just a few refills. The pico cebador controls the flow so the cebador (the person serving) can pour slowly into the same spot each time, keeping the montañita of yerba intact. It’s such a part of daily life in Uruguay that a mate flask without one looks unfinished.

How to Use

  1. Fill the gourd around two-thirds full with yerba mate.
  2. Cover the top with your palm, tip it upside down and shake gently to bring the dust to the surface.
  3. Tilt the gourd so the yerba forms a slope to one side.
  4. Pour a little cool water into the lower space and let it absorb.
  5. Insert the bombilla into the wet area, then pour hot water (70–80°C, never boiling) into the same spot.
  6. Sip, refill and enjoy.

Care

Empty the yerba after each session, rinse the gourd and bombilla with warm water and leave to dry. Wipe the sleeve with a damp cloth. Run hot water through the bombilla now and then to keep the filter clear.
