Description

Guarana; (paullinia cupana) is a plant native to the Amazon basin, and is especially cultivated in Brazil. It has been used for thousands of years by the amazonians as a natural remedy for well-being and stimulant for energy, stamina and strength.

It therefore makes a great ingredient to pair up with yerba mate which is also a source of energy, vitamins and minerals.

The seeds of the guarana; plant are a natural source of caffeine. The concentration of caffeine in Guarana; seeds is higher than that of coffee beans and the majority of caffeine consumed in South America comes from the Guarana plant. It is famous in South America, especially in Brazil for its energy-enhancing properties, and has more recently been adopted by energy drinks producers in the USA as a key ingredient.

How to Brew Yerba Mate Tea Bags

Yerba mate tea bags are the simplest way to enjoy mate — no gourd or bombilla needed. Just a mug and hot water.

Hot Mate Tea

  1. Boil fresh water and let it cool for a minute to around 80–85°C. If you don’t have a thermometer, just wait 30–60 seconds after the kettle clicks off.
  2. Place one tea bag in your favourite mug.
  3. Pour the hot water over the tea bag.
  4. Steep for 3–5 minutes — 3 minutes for a lighter, smoother cup; 5 minutes for a stronger, more robust flavour.
  5. Remove the tea bag and enjoy. Add honey, lemon, or a splash of milk if you like.

Iced Mate Tea

  1. Brew a strong cup — use one tea bag with half the usual amount of hot water. Steep for 5 minutes.
  2. Remove the tea bag and let it cool briefly.
  3. Pour over a glass full of ice — the ice will dilute it to the right strength.
  4. Add a squeeze of lemon or lime for a refreshing twist.

Tips

  • Don’t use boiling water directly — letting it cool slightly reduces bitterness and brings out more flavour.
  • Don’t squeeze the tea bag — this releases extra tannins and can make the tea taste bitter.
  • One bag per cup — mate tea bags are generously filled, so one is usually enough.
  • Try it with honey — a natural pairing that complements the earthy flavour of yerba mate.

Health Benefits of Yerba Mate

Yerba mate has been enjoyed for centuries across South America, valued not just for its unique flavour but for its remarkable health properties. It’s often described as having the strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea, and the euphoria of chocolate.

Natural Energy & Focus

Yerba mate contains caffeine (about 85mg per serving — similar to coffee), plus theobromine and theophylline. This combination provides a smooth, sustained energy boost without the jitters or crash associated with coffee. Many people report improved mental clarity and focus.

Rich in Antioxidants

Yerba mate contains more antioxidants than green tea, including polyphenols, saponins, and chlorogenic acid. These compounds help protect cells from damage and support overall health.

Vitamins & Minerals

Every cup of mate delivers a natural dose of essential nutrients including vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B3, and B5, as well as minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, and zinc.

Digestive & Metabolic Support

Traditionally used as a digestive aid, yerba mate stimulates bile production and may support healthy metabolism. Studies suggest it can help with weight management by increasing fat oxidation during exercise.

Social & Cultural Wellbeing

In South America, mate is more than a drink — it’s a social ritual. Sharing a gourd of mate with friends and family is a daily tradition that promotes connection, relaxation, and mindfulness. Many UK customers find that adopting the mate ritual brings a welcome moment of calm to their day.
