Description

Yerba Mate Taragui Vitality Without Stems Vitalityย 500g

500g loose leaf yerba mate Taragui Vitality without stems (sin palos) an Argentinian Classic. Blends that don’t have stems tend to be stronger than blends with stems (the stems serve to “dilute” the yerba) This Vitality blend is the same as the original “blue pack” Taragui Azul which is the traditional non-stem blend by Taragui.

The main differences are firstly the packaging redesign and rebranding. In order to give added protection against moisture a higher grade package is used.ย Secondly the Rainforest Alliance (RAS) has certified this item. This means the social and environmental conditions met in the production of this blend are of the highest standard, and reforestation is part of this. Consequently, workers rights and working conditions are guaranteed.

The only RAS Yerba Mate in the world 100 % produced with thin and thick leaves. Intense dark olive green, due to the brushing of the leaves. Ideal for French press-style infusions. Its high proportion of leaves makes it the ideal option to be consumed in areas with hard waters.

For the perfect brew, preparation is key and so full photo instructions will be provided with all purchases.

Taragui is one of the key brands of the Argentinian powerhouse yerba producer Las Marias. Las Marias has been producing yerba mate since 1924. Itย operates a strict policy of high level quality control while at the same time protecting the rights of workers.

Ingredients: 100% Yerba Mate

Brewing Your Yerba Mate

The tradition of drinking yerba mate is such an important part of the South American culture. This is specifically true in Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, althoughย in addition it is also enjoyed in other South American countries. Typically, yerba mateย is drunk from a natural gourd (a hollowed out fruit) used as a cup. The infusionย is then sipped through a metal straw known as a bombilla that has a filtered end to separate the infusion from the yerba leaves. This happens while groups of friends and family get together to chat, and enjoy mate together.

With any purchase of loose leaf yerba, full photo instructions will be provided on how to brew the perfect yerba mate. So there is no excuse not to brew the perfect yerba mate! If you get it right, your yerba will always taste great, and last twice as long. Most of all, practice makes perfect!

How to Prepare Yerba Mate

There’s no single “right” way to drink yerba mate โ€” it depends on your mood, the weather, and what you enjoy. Here are the most popular methods, from the classic hot mate to refreshing iced tererรฉ.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Hot Mate โ€” The Classic

The traditional way to enjoy yerba mate, shared across Argentina, Uruguay, and beyond.

  1. Fill the gourd โ€” Add yerba mate to about โ…” of the gourd.
  2. Tilt and shake โ€” Cover the opening, turn upside down and shake gently. This brings fine dust to the top and prevents clogging.
  3. Create a slope โ€” Tilt the gourd so the yerba rests at an angle, leaving a gap on one side.
  4. Add cool water first โ€” Pour a small amount of lukewarm water into the gap. Let it absorb for 1โ€“2 minutes to protect the leaves.
  5. Insert the bombilla โ€” Place into the wet side, pressing gently to the bottom. Don’t move it after this.
  6. Pour hot water (70โ€“80ยฐC) โ€” Never boiling! Pour into the gap near the bombilla. Keep some yerba dry for later refills.
  7. Sip and refill โ€” Drink the full serving, then add more hot water. Good yerba can last 10โ€“20 refills.

๐ŸงŠ Tererรฉ โ€” Cold Mate

The go-to in Paraguay and northeastern Argentina โ€” perfect for hot days. Any yerba mate works for tererรฉ.

  1. Fill the gourd or cup โ€” Add yerba mate to about ยฝ of a gourd or tall cup (a guampa is traditional).
  2. Add ice โ€” Pack ice cubes on top of the yerba.
  3. Pour ice-cold water โ€” Fill to the top with cold water.
  4. Insert the bombilla and drink โ€” Refill with cold water as you go.

Popular in Paraguay, where tererรฉ is the national drink and enjoyed throughout the day โ€” especially in warm weather.

๐ŸŠ Tererรฉ with Juice

A fruity twist on tererรฉ โ€” very popular in Paraguay and a great way to introduce mate to newcomers.

  1. Prepare the gourd โ€” Fill with yerba mate and ice as with regular tererรฉ.
  2. Use cold juice instead of water โ€” Orange, grapefruit, lemon, and pineapple all work brilliantly. Mix with a little cold water if the juice is too strong.
  3. Add fresh herbs โ€” Mint, lemongrass, or boldo leaves are traditional additions.
  4. Drink and refill โ€” Alternate between juice and plain cold water for variety.

โ„๏ธ Cold Brew Mate

A smoother, less bitter option โ€” great for making a jug to keep in the fridge.

  1. Add yerba to a jug or bottle โ€” Use about 2โ€“3 tablespoons per 500ml of cold water.
  2. Refrigerate for 4โ€“8 hours โ€” Overnight works perfectly.
  3. Strain and serve โ€” Use a sieve or cafetiรจre. Add ice, lemon, or honey to taste.

Cold brewing extracts less bitterness and more subtle flavours. It’s a refreshing alternative on hot summer days.

โ˜• Quick Mug Method

No gourd? No problem.

  1. Add 1โ€“2 tablespoons of yerba mate to a cafetiรจre (French press) or tea infuser.
  2. Pour hot water at 70โ€“80ยฐC and steep for 3โ€“5 minutes.
  3. Strain and enjoy โ€” add honey or lemon if you like.

General Tips

  • Never use boiling water for hot mate โ€” it burns the leaves and turns the flavour bitter.
  • Don’t stir โ€” moving the bombilla disturbs the filter and the yerba slope.
  • First sips are strongest โ€” the flavour mellows with each refill.
  • Experiment freely โ€” try different yerbas with different methods to find your favourite combination.

Health Benefits of Yerba Mate

Yerba mate has been enjoyed for centuries across South America, valued not just for its unique flavour but for its remarkable health properties. It’s often described as having the strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea, and the euphoria of chocolate.

Natural Energy & Focus

Yerba mate contains caffeine (about 85mg per serving โ€” similar to coffee), plus theobromine and theophylline. This combination provides a smooth, sustained energy boost without the jitters or crash associated with coffee. Many people report improved mental clarity and focus.

Rich in Antioxidants

Yerba mate contains more antioxidants than green tea, including polyphenols, saponins, and chlorogenic acid. These compounds help protect cells from damage and support overall health.

Vitamins & Minerals

Every cup of mate delivers a natural dose of essential nutrients including vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B3, and B5, as well as minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, and zinc.

Digestive & Metabolic Support

Traditionally used as a digestive aid, yerba mate stimulates bile production and may support healthy metabolism. Studies suggest it can help with weight management by increasing fat oxidation during exercise.

Social & Cultural Wellbeing

In South America, mate is more than a drink โ€” it’s a social ritual. Sharing a gourd of mate with friends and family is a daily tradition that promotes connection, relaxation, and mindfulness. Many UK customers find that adopting the mate ritual brings a welcome moment of calm to their day.
