Chia
Chia (salvia hispanica) is a plant from the mint family, native to Mexico and Guatemala. A serving of Chia seeds (1oz/28g) contains of your recommended daily intake:
18% of your RDA of calcium
27% of your RDA of phosphorus
30% of your RDA of manganese
The whole chia seeds are tiny and smooth. This seed brings a very interesting texture to enhance foods: they can be eaten crunchy and raw, or soaked in liquid to produce a jelly like mixture. Some serving suggestions:
- As a fun, crunchy topping with yoghurt and honey
- Soak in water/milk overnight then mix with porridge, banana and nuts
- As an ingredient for homemade bread with mixed seeds
