Yerba Mate Taragui Teabags

40 individually wrapped yerba mate Taragui teabags. This box contains 40 individually wrapped yerba mate teabags. When you brew yerba mate from these teabags, the infusion has the same great taste as traditional loose leaf yerba mate. It is convenient and quick. Perfect if you’re on the go, or in a rush!

Taragui is one of the key brands of the Argentinian powerhouse yerba producer Las Marias. Las Marias has been producing yerba mate since 1924. You can read more about Las Marias and the Taragui brand here

The tradition of drinking yerba mate is such an important part of the South American culture. This is specifically true in Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil. However in addition it is also enjoyed in other South American countries. Typically, it is drunk from a natural gourd (a hollowed out fruit) used as a cup. It is then sipped through a metal straw known as a bombilla that has a filtered end to separate the infusion from the yerba leaves. This happens while groups of friends and family get together to chat, and enjoy mate together. In recent times, teabags have become very popular.

Whilst teabags don’t give the same experience as drinking traditionally, they are very convenient. The quality of taste is the same! Consequently they can be easily enjoyed when brewing yerba mate traditionally would be difficult such as at work.

How to Brew Yerba Mate Tea Bags

Yerba mate tea bags are the simplest way to enjoy mate — no gourd or bombilla needed. Just a mug and hot water.

Hot Mate Tea

  1. Boil fresh water and let it cool for a minute to around 80–85°C. If you don’t have a thermometer, just wait 30–60 seconds after the kettle clicks off.
  2. Place one tea bag in your favourite mug.
  3. Pour the hot water over the tea bag.
  4. Steep for 3–5 minutes — 3 minutes for a lighter, smoother cup; 5 minutes for a stronger, more robust flavour.
  5. Remove the tea bag and enjoy. Add honey, lemon, or a splash of milk if you like.

Iced Mate Tea

  1. Brew a strong cup — use one tea bag with half the usual amount of hot water. Steep for 5 minutes.
  2. Remove the tea bag and let it cool briefly.
  3. Pour over a glass full of ice — the ice will dilute it to the right strength.
  4. Add a squeeze of lemon or lime for a refreshing twist.

Tips

  • Don’t use boiling water directly — letting it cool slightly reduces bitterness and brings out more flavour.
  • Don’t squeeze the tea bag — this releases extra tannins and can make the tea taste bitter.
  • One bag per cup — mate tea bags are generously filled, so one is usually enough.
  • Try it with honey — a natural pairing that complements the earthy flavour of yerba mate.

Health Benefits of Yerba Mate

Yerba mate has been enjoyed for centuries across South America, valued not just for its unique flavour but for its remarkable health properties. It’s often described as having the strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea, and the euphoria of chocolate.

Natural Energy & Focus

Yerba mate contains caffeine (about 85mg per serving — similar to coffee), plus theobromine and theophylline. This combination provides a smooth, sustained energy boost without the jitters or crash associated with coffee. Many people report improved mental clarity and focus.

Rich in Antioxidants

Yerba mate contains more antioxidants than green tea, including polyphenols, saponins, and chlorogenic acid. These compounds help protect cells from damage and support overall health.

Vitamins & Minerals

Every cup of mate delivers a natural dose of essential nutrients including vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B3, and B5, as well as minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, and zinc.

Digestive & Metabolic Support

Traditionally used as a digestive aid, yerba mate stimulates bile production and may support healthy metabolism. Studies suggest it can help with weight management by increasing fat oxidation during exercise.

Social & Cultural Wellbeing

In South America, mate is more than a drink — it’s a social ritual. Sharing a gourd of mate with friends and family is a daily tradition that promotes connection, relaxation, and mindfulness. Many UK customers find that adopting the mate ritual brings a welcome moment of calm to their day.

lots of plastic
The tea is great, but unfortunately each bag is indivually wrapped in plastic. If I had known this before I wouldn't have ordered it.
