Getting Started with your Yerba Mate Sample
To try the loose leaf yerba you will need a bombilla which is a straw with a filter at one end, usually made from metal. Loose leaf yerba is typically drunk from a “mate” a type of cup. The most traditional type is the natural gourd, although there are other cups made of glass, wood and ceramic available too. The way yerba is prepared is by filling the cup to around 3/4 full and adding a little water to allow the leaves to swell inside. The bombilla is then inserted into the mate cup and hot water is added. The resulting brew is subsequently sipped through the bombilla. This last step is then repeated over and over. Traditionally, mate is enjoyed in groups and the mate is passed around in a “round” system. This is why mate is such an important social tradition in South America.
A full colour instruction leaflet will be provided with photos to help you get it right! You can also read how to brew the perfect yerba mate here.
The yerba mate tea bags are just like any normal teabag. The way to prepare it is to add hot water to the teabag in a mug and then allow to brew. Normal brewing time is 2-3 minutes but this can be increased or decreased according to your taste.
