Rosewood Mate Cup and Bombilla
A lovely starter set consisting of a rosewood mate cup and stainless steel bombilla – perfect to drink your yerba mate. The Rosewood used is Dalbergia latifolia and is a hardwood native to the Indian tropical monsoon forests Rosewood is a very strong hardwood and looks stunning due to the dark rich colour and interesting grain.
This wood makes a substantial mate cup which is both strong, heavy and at the same is attractive. The items are all made by hand so please remember that the piece you receive may differ slightly in size and shape. The wood itself also has an interesting and very varied grain so the exact markings will of course vary. Photos are provided to show examples of the kind of pattern and grain that you can expect.
The bombilla is a simple, classical design with a “spoon” shaped filter. This is ideal for manipulating the yerba during use. It is made from stainless steel so won’t oxidise
This mate cup is hand turned and the size can therefore vary slightly, but the average dimensions of this mate cup are:
Diameter at the widest point – 8cm
Height – 11cm
Volume – 250ml
The length of the bombilla is 19cm
Use and Care
Each mate cup is pre-prepared with a food-safe wax coating. This is to help the curing process and make the wood water proof. It has a strong wax smell and this will fade over time. When you receive your Rosewood mate cup please soak in hot water and remove the wax layer with a sponge.
To cure, you should rub oil or butter on the inside walls. Add yerba mate leave and a small amount of water – enough to wet the leaves only not too much – and leave for a day. This process seals the pores and increases the life of the mate. For detailed information, read more about how to cure a mate or gourd.
The bombilla requires no special treatment in advance of use although we recommend it be rinsed before use. To clean it be be rinsed under running water, and also cleaned with a cleaning brush. To “deep clean” it, it should be boiled in water with vinegar to dislodge any debris and then cleaned with a cleaning brush.
