Palo Santo is a hardwood native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Mate cups made of Palo Santo are popular because this fragrant wood contributes to the flavour, especially when used over time.

This wood is especially fragile, and as such should be cured to prevent splitting. To cure a palo santo mate, you should rub oil or butter on the inside walls. Add yerba mate leave and a small amount of water – enough to wet the leaves only not too much – and leave for a day. This process seals the pores and increases the life of the mate. A nice beautifully smelling palo

A nice beautifully smelling palo santo mate. I think it is great quality for the price but remember to cure properly. I noticed a few people complaining about these cracking who had bought through Amazon, I have had ones from Argentina cost five times more than this crack within a week. I just don't understand people's adversity to glue! My father in law uses a non toxic, food safe wood glue and he has been using the same palo santo cup for the last 30 years and its got multiple cracks large and small you CANNOT taste or smell the glue and its non toxic food grade, the flavour his cup imparts to the drink is wonderful after so much use. I wish people would stop moaning and just glue the crack, it's wood, it cracks! but you really don't need a new one. It just adds character to it in my opinion, and how can the vendor possibly know which will crack or won't? Just glue it (with the right glue of course) and just keep enjoying your faithful old cup. A bargain price.....
