Large Rosewood Mate Cup
A very attractive large rosewood mate cup to drink your yerba mate. This Rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia) is a hardwood native to the tropical monsoon forests of India. It is a particularly sought after wood due to its strength and interesting grain which is truly stunning. It is a rich and dark wooden colour.
This wood is especially heavy and strong, so ideal for an attractive and substantial cup for drinking yerba mate. The items are all handmade so please bear in mind that the piece you receive may differ slightly in shape and size. But also the wood itself has a very varied and interesting grain so the exact pattern will vary. Photos are provided to show examples of the kind of grain and pattern you can expect.
This mate cup is hand turned and the size can therefore vary slightly, but the average dimensions of this mate cup are:
Diameter at the widest point – 8cm
Height – 11cm
Volume – 250ml
Each mate cup is pre-prepared with a food-safe wax coating. This is to help the curing process and make the wood water proof. It has a strong wax smell and this will fade over time. When you receive your Rosewood mate cup please soak in hot water and remove the wax layer with a sponge.
To cure, you should rub oil or butter on the inside walls. Add yerba mate leave and a small amount of water – enough to wet the leaves only not too much – and leave for a day. This process seals the pores and increases the life of the mate. For detailed information, read more about how to cure a mate or gourd.
